Nelson was offered a contract at Bury by manager Andy Preece after scout Peter Ward convinced him to give Nelson a chance. Between his time at Gigg Lane from 2001-2003 he made 79 appearances and scored 8 goals, he formed a strong defensive partnership with Danny Swailes.
